Masternaut helps LSS improve waste management

LSS Waste Management, one of the UK’s largest independent skip hire and waste management companies, has invested in advanced web based vehicle tracking Masternaut. The Masternaut service enables remote monitoring of the company’s fleet of delivery, service and support vehicles in real time, improving customer service levels, increasing operating efficiencies and providing additional protection for workers in the field.

“We have previously used a first generation tracking solution,” said Nigel Woolford, Managing Director of LSS Waste Management Ltd. “However the Masternaut service takes vehicle tracking to the next level offering improved functionality, remote access and the ability to programme event based alarms that are specific to our needs.” Woolford continued, “By improving the service we provide and the efficiency with which we deliver Masternaut contributes to our profit rather than adding to our costs.”

LSS Waste Management is based in Leeds and operates throughout Yorkshire providing a total waste management solution for both commercial and domestic clients. They have invested £7 million in a technically advanced waste-recycling centre, one of the largest in the UK, enabling them to recycle nearly 80% of all recovered waste. With over 4,000 skips at client sites at any given point in time this is a significant achievement.

The company operates a fleet of 50 Scania Skip Loaders and Hook Loaders delivering and collecting skips throughout the county, plus a number of service and support vehicles. Each vehicle has an onboard sensor enabling the real time transmission of information to Masternaut’s secure, centralised server.

Using satellite positioning technology Masternaut calculates the position of individual vehicles providing minute by minute and turn by turn records of movements. Online street mapping together with satellite imagery and aerial photography from Microsoft Virtual Earth, enables managers at LSS to view vehicle movements in real time and real world context, via a secure log-in from either the LSS 15 screen Traffic Room or any web-connected PC or hand held device. The system has also been programmed to provide managers with alarms to alert them to out of the ordinary vehicle movements.

“Masternaut improves the safety of our operators. If a unit is on site longer than expected an audible alarm alerts managers to the fact and the system will not allow further interaction until contact has been made,” continued Woolford. “Our staff now have confidence in the back up operation as they know help can be quickly on hand if required.”
